How to Take Care of Your Hair

Your hair is your crown. Oftentimes, it is what people notice first about you. So it doesn’t really matter if you have the world’s most beautiful haircut or wearing the most expensive suit as long your hair looks unhealthy and greasy.

Basic hair care is important for both men and women from all walks of life. It can be done in easy and practical steps by following the advice below:

Shampoo

Washing is essential to having healthy hair. The key is to not put too much shampoo on your hair and to massage the scalp with your fingertips. Do *not* scratch it with your nails. And be careful to not overwash. Your hair needs the oils on your scalp, so wash it about 3 times per week - never daily.

The shampoo you use should depend on your hair type (link to the shampoo page). When in doubt, ask your hairdresser. You can gain so much more from using a product that was specifically made for your hair. Another beneficial thing you can do is to wash it from a bent-over position. This way, you improve your scalp circulation, which leads to stronger hair.

Conditioner

The traditional and easy way to do it is to apply it after you’ve shampooed and rinsed your hair well. Depending on the length of your hair, you can put up to a handful of conditioner of store-bought brands, less if it’s a professional one.

Apply it gently on the length of your hair, especially on the ends, and never on your scalp. Leave for about 3 minutes, after which you should rinse well with warm water or even better, cold water.

Air Dry

When it comes to drying your hair, heat is not your friend. Blow drying attacks the moisture of your hair and scalp and it can cause real damage if you use it too often.

Instead, pat your hair gently with a soft towel and allow it the time to air dry. When it’s almost dry, you can detangle it using a brush. Begin to style your hair when you’re sure the hair is completely dry.

Trimming

Having a haircut every couple of weeks is essential to maintaining a healthy natural look. The amount of time you need to wait in between haircuts depends on the length & type of your hair, if it’s dyed or natural, and whether you want to grow it out or not.

Generally, for short hair, it’s good to get a trim once every four weeks, while for medium to long hair, you should wait about six to eight weeks. If you’re unsure about what’s best for your hair, remember to ask your hairdresser for advice.

Diet

Let’s not forget about the impact your diet can have on your hair. Smoking, alcohol or eating unhealthy food can negatively impact your appearance, including your hair. In case you follow our advice already and you see no improvement, you should reconsider your diet and eating habits.
